Tom Hanks' Father

THIS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR FACE, I HOPE
Tom Hanks' Father:
If you were alive in 1957, and old enough to enjoy Rock and Roll, you will probably remember the group, "The Diamonds" who had just launched their super hit "Little Darlin' ". For you that are too young to remember - it was a time when the performers were happy, enjoying themselves, respecting their fans, dressed appropriately and their lyrics could be understood. They did not feel obligated to scream, eat the microphone, mumble inaudible lyrics or trash the set.
In 1957, The Diamonds had a hit with "Little Darlin". 47 years later, they were requested to perform at Atlantic City ... This link leads to both performances.
Watch the first one then scroll down for the new one 47 years later.
Tom Hanks' father is much better looking than Tom, and even better looking with age. In the linked videos Tom Hanks' father is the lead singer on the left. He still has it! Hope you enjoy.
2 Performances 47 years apart

Steps in Our Journey

Special angel, special rose.

An important step in my on-going journey was recently taken when I was assigned a mentee (Wendy) in the Mentor Program at Eastside College Prep in Palo Alto. Why so important?

Bruce began contributing to the school at the beginning when it boasted two trailers that provided school rooms for incredibly smart and very under-privileged kids. When he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma he accelerated his gift-giving and participated in the dedication of the Cann Quad.

The school graduated 60 students this week, has an amazingly challenging curriculum, and a complement of dorms! Every student is headed to a four-year school!

This week I sat with Wendy (the angel!) Vargas' family for her graduation ceremony during which persons who had contributed in some way to a student's welfare were given a rose by the student.

A special moment for each of us (picture of her to come). Her hobby is designing computerized stuffe--a talking bear which provides nutritional advice to kids, a bicycle for the blind( needs serious refining) and an educational app, "What is this?" (Guess what spawned that idea?)

Wendy is very special new friend to me, talented and off to a wonderful chapter in her life. We will be filling the Highlander in August and head to UCSF Merced when she steps into a major, important chapter of her life.

I am blessed share it with her.

Concert Night

Orphan Annie sports borrowed jacket and earrings. As our last evening together, we spiff up a bit ready for singing and lots of laughter at the show.

Off to UK tomorrow to see new things.

Cheerio, olde beans,

LJ

Endearing

Amusing beer-drinker in front of our "home" and experimental blog entry of newly imported fotos to my iPad. It is Friday and 85 degrees or a gorgeous and expected summer day.

Apparently my suitcase has moved onto Prague and will arrive in tomorrow and be checked with friends' luggage. I shall unpack if when I return from uk.

Won't take long to pack tonight...merely return clothes to folks who have lent them to me!

Photogenic Salzburg

I can't capture the soul of this trip, the music, but the city is, at once, subdued, gracious, energetic and richly old.

Sigh with love,

Same lake...

...a few minutes later...different perspective...

Alpine Mirror

Lake mirrors mountain

Clouds, sky, dreams
unknown, untouched

In a calm revealed.

Spring day...

...in Austrian village of St. Gilgen in lakes region -- totally clean and clear as only electric boats and sailing are permitted!

Peaceful it is (prior to tourist season),

Guard Lamb Kidnapped!!!

Lamb Chop on duty guarding the electronics before the kidnapping.

Lamb Chop (LC) has been missing since Munich. Tucked carefully in his suitcase, he and the suitcase never arrived in Salzburg, and just yesterday they were located in Budapest.  Needless to say, much consternation has surrounded this revoltin' situation.

High level sleuthing by the organizer of this trip resulted in finding him on a Japanese tour in Hungary.

The Fat Lady is humming on this case, but may not be singing until I return on the 17th.

Meanwhile I wore the same outfit for five days and now, with contributions from fellow-travelers including a long Chanel jacket, I have some clothes to wear. And Dotty has created a buffet of toiletries that we share.

I have lovely pix to post over the next few days, and the music has been non-stop, beginning with our first stop and lunch on Sunday.

We have sunshine today for a trip to a mountain lake. It is all glorious territory.

Cheers,

Laura/LJ

A glimpse ...

... of the merriment...last evening's entertainment included an adult version of "Good Night", etc. complete with the night gowns we all used to own -- with price tags! (from eBay).

TTFN,

Laura/LJ

Rowdy and Rambling

And, dear Laura, that's exactly what I hope you're being: rowdy as well as rambling. Pull out the stops and sing and frolic your heart out!

Sheer and utter beauty

We are finally in the hills and, indeed, they ARE alive with the sound of music! As is the castle and the hallways.

Drive over flat-land west into Austria and the beautiful partially covered hills with snow.

We begin exploring today. O happy day!

While last year's blog featured "things", it is my sense that this year will feature beautiful pictures of this earth.

Off to play tourist,

Wilkommen!

Ahhhh:Munchen, mein Liebling Staat!  The one place in the world that can lure me away from wine (though the whites are superb) and into beer. In my youth I could down a "mass" (liter) without ill effects. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!  Prosit!

Susan Barkan

Yeaaaa!

Hey you,

Yes, I can imagine you "feeling well" and being profoundly grateful!!!  Yeaaaa!

So glad to hear that you arrived safely and are already having a lovely time.  Looking forward to the next installment!

Love,

Trish

Your blog and your travels.

Hi Lara,  I am pleased to see that you are touring and enjoying life.

What is with the foot!  It is not like you haven’t had your share of the medicos.

Take care of yourself and enjoy.

Goodbye, so long and farewell  Or as they say in Germany, (I think that is where you are. )

Auf Wiedersehen, so lange und Abschied

Gordon Lothrop

Ach! Arrived!

Dear Ones,

Partially sunny day and the view from aloft a patchwork quilt of brown earth, green growings, and bright yellow patches punctuated with large groves of varying degrees of green trees. It is always so exciting to descend through the clouds and see what the geography presents!

The mostest, bestest part of today was arriving...feeling well and profoundly grateful to feel well.  You cannot imagine.

The Sheraton near the airport is filled with wonderful energy.  Many familiar faces, few remembered names.  A village church does a serenade with bells every four hours accompanied by a mf chorus of bird calls.

Walk through a small village, buffet dinner and reuniting.  Fall into bed.

I have little more to say except my intense feeling of gratitude for even being here.

Quite humbly,

<laura

Don't leave home without me...

She is off again, and I was NOT going to be left behind so I slept on the suitcase. I must see hills that are alive with music

La, a Lamb, a La La Lamb..

STRATEGY WORKED. I AM IN HER PURSE.
